The Road to Zero Waste
The goal is to strengthen national policy and regulation toward sustainable waste management that helps move the country to a zero-waste approach. In this process, Eco-justice Ethiopia wants to work with partners to change the consumption patterns of the society. The zero Waste approach is the process of conservation of all resources by means of responsible production, consumption, reuse, and recovery of products, packaging, and materials without burning and with no discharges to land, water, or air that threaten the environment or human health.
Under this umbrella project, Eco-justice Ethiopia has already started working on plastics management in Ethiopia. This sub-project advocates for the proper regulation of plastic use in Ethiopia by showing the negative impacts of unregulated plastic use. We are lobbying for national legislation to end single-use plastic bags in Ethiopia. This project is engaged with the Environmental Protection Authority in Ethiopia and lobbies the relevant departments to take a more active role in international negotiations.
Here we are also trying to promote the creation of a platform for waste pickers to be recognized as important players in the urban areas' waste management system. Click here to preview the documentary we will launch soon entitled "Beyond the Trash: Portraits of Waste Pickers"
