The Objective of the workshop was to identify possible ways of working together to alleviate negative environmental impacts of improper chemicals management and discuss the possibility of forming national multi-stakeholder fora that can coordinate pathways for efficient national chemicals management.

Multi-stakeholder Strategic Chemical Management
The purpose of this particular project is the implementation of a strategic multi-stakeholder chemical management in Ethiopia, based on developing and supporting multi-stakeholder models for chemicals and waste management. Thus, the project prepares Eco-Justice Ethiopia to promote the use of various guidance documents by respective decision makers and authorities for legal and institutional reforms in support of implementing a strategic sound management of chemicals. Additionally, this project will serve as a basis for a strengthened science-policy interface where stakeholders from the scientific community, civil society, academic and policy makers engage in meaningful ways to inform decisions and actions on chemicals management in the context of Ethiopia. Accordingly, considering the overarching aim of the whole project, Eco-Justice Ethiopia has started to advance in the establishment of multi-stakeholder fora in Ethiopia, and is prepared to support the sound management of chemicals and waste at national and regional levels.
The Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) is a voluntary multi-stakeholder multi-sectoral global policy framework. Since its inception in 2006, it has aimed to achieve the sound management of chemicals throughout their life cycle and for chemicals to be produced and used in ways that minimize significant adverse impacts on the environment and human health. An important objective of such approach at the national level is to build upon existing chemicals management initiatives in various sectors and strengthening coordination and coherence among various government and stakeholder initiatives.
Formalized and systematic multi-stakeholder models for a sound chemical management, involving CSOs, private and public stakeholders, altogether, are missing in most African countries. Similarly, many countries in the global south lack a systematic and coordinated multi stakeholder approach to chemicals and waste management. In some countries where multi stakeholder forums do exist, these have remained largely ad hoc and underfunded due to low political understanding and will on chemicals impact resulting in poor coordination on safe chemicals and waste management.
